How does one recognize Anxiety?

However severe, ongoing anxiety that interferes with day-to-day activities may be a sign of generalized anxiety disorder. It's possible to develop generalized anxiety disorder as a child, teen or as an adult. Anxiety disorder symptoms can vary. They can include:
  • Inability to shut your mind off
  • Constant worrying or obsession about small or large concerns
  • Restlessness and feeling keyed up or on edge
  • Feeling emotionally exhausted
  • Difficulty concentrating or your mind "going blank"
  • Irritability or feelings of frustration
  • Muscle tension or muscle aches
  • Trembling, feeling twitchy or being easily startled
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Sweating, nausea or diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath or rapid heartbeat
Early detection and treatment is critical!

In addition to the symptoms above, children and teens may worry about:
  • School grades
  • Peer pressure
  • Social or sports events
  • Presentations
  • Being on time (punctuality)
  • Frightening current events
A child with the disorder may also:
  • Strive for parental approval
  • Be extremely shy and withdrawn
  • Worry about their parent's relationship
  • Feel overly anxious to fit in socially
  • Be a perfectionist
  • Lack confidence
  • Redo tasks because they aren't perfect the first time
  • Require a lot of reassurance about performance
Your worries are unlikely to simply go away on their own, and they may actually get worse over time. Try to seek professional help before your anxiety becomes severe - it may be easier to treat early on. It can get worse.
"Our anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strengths." (Charles H. Spurgeon)
